Westwood Tennis

Facility
Westwood has ten tennis courts, including six Deco-Turf II cushioned hard courts and four Har-Tru clay courts. The Deco-Turf II hard courts are open year round in a climate-controlled, permanent indoor tennis facility. Both the indoor hard courts and the outdoor clay courts have viewing patios and are professionally landscaped.

Lockers are located in the tennis pro shop building and are available to members for a fee.

Pro Shop
The Westwood Tennis Pro Shop offers the latest tennis fashions at member prices. The tennis shop has gained the reputation as being the best in Northern Virginia by offering the largest selection of women's, men's and children's clothing. Westwood's tennis professionals are eager to help members with questions regarding equipment such as racquets, strings, grips, shoes, or bags. Our staff can also help with custom orders or selecting the perfect gift for someone special.

Services
Lessons & Clinics - Westwood offers a variety of lesson options for its members. Private and semi-private lessons and group lessons are available year round from the professional staff. In addition, group instruction and clinics for juniors are available for all ages and levels of play. Westwood's tennis staff also offer video training sessions, hitting partner services for advanced players and fitness classes for members and guests.

Competition - Westwood has a number of highly competitive tennis events and programs for its members of all playing abilities. The Westwood Club Championships allow many levels of competition with the final rounds being played during the highly popular "Championship Weekend" event. The junior tennis ladder, junior team play and junior club championships are held each summer for boys and girls in multiple age groups. Westwood also has a year round schedule of tennis events combining competition and fun for players of all levels.

Westwood's team tennis program is one of the best in the area with more than 100 men and women playing tennis on teams participating in the Interclub League of Northern Virginia and various USTA leagues. Teams are available for players of all levels with team practices organized and run by members of the tennis professional staff. During the summer, the boys and girls junior tennis teams compete against other clubs in Northern Virginia.

Reminders
In order to make your tennis experience at Westwood Country Club as enjoyable as possible please follow the following guidelines:

  • Talk quietly when standing near tennis courts while in use.
  • Turn off cell phone ringers before entering the Indoor Tennis Facility.
  • Wait until a point is over and the players give permission for you to pass prior to crossing a court.
  • Groups going to and from a court should try to cross as a group when possible.
  • Please wait until your assigned time before entering a court in use.
  • If people are waiting, please leave the court immediately upon expiration of your assigned time.
  • Appropriate tennis apparel is required. No jeans, cargo shorts, or gym shorts are permitted.
  • Shoes designed for tennis are required.


Tennis Pro & Staff

Joni Hannah - Director of Tennis
Joni is responsible for the oversight of the tennis professionals, support staff and facilities and the development and implementation of the Club's various tennis programs and activities. Joni joined the Westwood team in 1992 as a teaching professional and was appointed director in 1996. As an instructor, Joni specializes in the development of top junior players in match strategy and tournament preparation and has worked with a number of nationally ranked players. Joni is also a top player on the women's senior tennis circuit and has won numerous national titles and represented the United States in international team competition. In 2006, Joni won the Margaret M. Russo National Sportsmanship Award from the National Senior Women's Tennis Association. She is president of the Virginia USPTA and a past recipient of the USTA-Virginia Professional of the Year and the Middle Atlantic Professional Tennis Association's Teaching Professional of the Year awards.


Terence Killen - Head Tennis Pro
Terence is responsible for all junior tennis programs, team matches and tennis social events. His knowledge of the game and enthusiasm on the court make Westwood's junior tennis program one of the most successful in Northern Virginia. Terence also oversees Westwood's inter-club teams and is responsible for training the assistant professionals and clinic instructors to maintain Westwood's high quality tennis instruction.

Mark Ferlazzo - Assistant Tennis Pro
Mark joined the Westwood tennis staff in 2007. Mark has over 20 years of teaching experience. He taught tennis at the Old Hall Country Club in Chester, England and was a long time member of the teaching staff at Longboat Key in Sarasota, Florida. Westwood members can benefit from his vast knowledge and experience. Mark currently teaches private and group lessons and specializes in women's team tennis.

Alexandra Gaspar - Tennis Pro
Alexandra joined the Westwood tennis staff in April 2011. She previously played on the national Romanian Tour as well as the ITF. She graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a major in French and a minor in English. Her playing experience and enthusiasm on court make her the perfect teaching pro for the competitive junior or the serious adult player.
